DESCRIPTION:Please join us on May 5\, 2026\, at 12:30 p.m. EDST for the next NABR Webinar. Jerrold Tannenbaum will be returning and joined by Brandon Morton and Taylor Bennett for a presentation titled “How Can We Defend Animal Research – As Ideology That Rejects Sound Science and Humane Ethics Is Increasingly Driving the Opposition?” \nDefending animal research is becoming increasingly difficult. Not because research has failed to contribute to the health and well-being of humans and animals\, but because a large and increasing proportion of the opposition ignores or dismisses scientific evidence of the effectiveness\, and necessity\, of animal research. Opponents also increasingly ignore or dismiss ethical principles that have been cornerstones of medical science\, such as the principle that humans are of greater worth and value than animals and that we may use them when necessary to understand and combat disease\, illness\, and disability. \nAnimal research opponents are adopting ideologies that ignore or reject critical scientific and ethical principles that have traditionally been foundations of animal research. These ideologies are adopted before debate or discussion even begins. The result is that it has become even more difficult for the research community to defend animal research by documenting the necessity and benefits of this research\, the humane treatment of research animals\, and the lack of availability of non-animal methodologies in certain kinds of research. \nIdeological rejection of animal research is not new. What is new is its adoption by government officials who have the power to curtail and eventually end animal research. In the past\, such officials could be counted on to consider impartially and fairly the scientific and ethical case for animal research. \nThis webinar will describe and explain the most important ideologies employed against scientifically and ethically valuable and necessary animal research. We will explore ways of countering these ideologies\, including practical steps all who are involved in animal research can\, and must\, take now.

DESCRIPTION:Call for Proposals Now Open: 2026 National Conference on Addiction Recovery Science (NCARS) \nWe are pleased to share that the Call for Proposals is now open for the National Conference on Addiction Recovery Science (NCARS). This year’s conference is fully virtual\, based on the positive feedback on the format in prior years and the interest in ensuring the conference accessible to a wide audience\, especially all our recovery community partners. \nNCARS Mission and Purpose: The third annual 2026 National Conference on Addiction Recovery Science aims to bring together researchers at all stages of training and experience to stimulate exchange of ideas and allow for the presentation of cutting-edge research across the spectrum of alcohol and other drug use disorders and affected populations. This is the first national conference specifically dedicated to substance use disorder recovery science\, and features plenary talks from national leaders\, symposia\, roundtable discussions\, poster session\, mentorship session\, recovery organization supporter booths\, and monetary early career investigator poster awards. The cost for early bird registration is $85 for professionals\, $35 for undergraduate and graduate students\, which increase to $100 and $50 respectively in July 2026. DESCRIPTION:Call For Papers: Technology-Based Interventions to Address Mental Health or Substance Use at the Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences\nHICSS-60: January 5-8\, 2027\nHilton Waikoloa Village\, Big Island \nWhat is it?\nHICSS is the longest standing scientific conference in the information systems and technology field. Since 1968\, it has attracted high caliber scholars and professionals in academia\, industry\, and government agencies around the world. Approximately half of attendees are from outside the US. \nWhy submit work to HICSS? \nWith the growing importance of technology in the delivery of healthcare\, “Information Technology and Healthcare” is quickly becoming one of the largest areas of interest among HICSS attendees. It’s important to have the voices of medicine\, behavioral medicine and the social sciences represented along side technologists \nHow do I submit my research?\nConference submissions are not abstracts - they are fully developed papers that are peer reviewed. Authors of accepted papers have the opportunity to respond to reviews and edit their papers before publication in the conference journal. DESCRIPTION:The RAMS Program has opened up recruitment for our 15th cohort of Addiction Medicine and Addiction Psychiatry fellows interested in pursuing research! \nResearch in Addiction Medicine (RAMS) is a two-year supplemental program to one’s Addiction Medicine or Addiction Psychiatry fellowship and open to fellows who are considering a future academic research dimension in their career. For those enrolled in a one-year fellowship\, we are looking for individuals who plan to enter into an academic position. RAMS is funded by a grant from the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA). Co-Directors are Drs. Patrick O’Connor (Yale) and Jeffrey Samet (BU)\, and the Associate Director is Dr. E. Jennifer Edelman (Yale). \n\nRAM Scholars are eligible to receive up to $8\,000 to develop their research\nRAM Scholars learn how to conduct impactful addiction research through leadership development and harm reduction frameworks\nRAMS provides mentorship by NIDA-funded experts in addiction research\, including the opportunity for Scholars to visit their National Advisory Committee (NAC) mentor on-site at their institution\nRAM Scholars and their institutional mentors attend an annual retreat in late fall\, alternating between Boston and Vancouver\nRAM Scholars are supported to attend the annual meeting of The College on Problems of Drug Dependence (CPDD)\n\nThe next Fall Retreat will be held December 1 – 3\, 2026 in Vancouver and program applications are due Friday\, September 4th. \nEmails of intent to apply are appreciated by Friday\, August 7th.
