SUMMARY:NABR Webinar: “One Health and Animal Research: The Good\, the Bad\, and the Ugly”
DESCRIPTION:NABR Webinar:“One Health and Animal Research: The Good\, the Bad\, and the Ugly” \nPlease join us on Tuesday\, April 16th\, at 12:30 p.m. EST when Jerrold Tannenbaum returns to our webinar series with a presentation titled: “One Health and Animal Research: The Good\, the Bad\, and the Ugly.” “One Health” is today the most influential organizing concept in the medical sciences. From the American Veterinary Medical Association\, to the American Medical Association\, to the World Health Organization\, One Health is proclaimed — and virtually universally accepted — as both the primary goal of\, and the underlying methodological approach used in medical and veterinary research\, education\, and practice. \nThis webinar will describe the crucial role laboratory animal research played in the development of the concept of One Medicine\, the historical precursor of One Health. The discussion will review differing approaches to One Health and will discuss how biomedical animal research can be an important component of some of these approaches. The webinar will also highlight current approaches to One Health that provide challenges to laboratory animal research. These include the increasing use of privately owned animals\, mainly pet cats and dogs\, in clinical studies and trials. Of greater concern are approaches to One Health that diminish the importance of human and animal research that benefits human health; would require the diversion of critical resources away from animal research; incorporate concepts of “health” (such as environmental health\, ecosystem health\, or planetary health) that are unhelpful and may be incoherent; and include societal or geopolitical considerations that have no clear connection to science-driven biomedical research. \nThe webinar will examine how the biomedical research community can recognize\, and counter approaches to One Health that are inimical to or threaten animal research. The discussion will suggest ways the community can support and engage in approaches to One Health that appropriately benefit people\, animals\, and the environment. \nRegistration for the webinar is available here. \n

SUMMARY:NABR Webinar: Q&A With the USDA - The 12th Edition
DESCRIPTION:NABR Webinar: Q&A With the USDA - The 12th Edition \nNABR is once again pleased to announce the return of one of its most requested webinars\,  "Q&A with the USDA." Join USDA-APHIS Animal Care’s Drs. Elizabeth Theodorson\, assistant deputy administrator for Animal Welfare Operations\, and Dr. Louis DiVincenti\, senior veterinary medical officer -research\, for "Q&A with the USDA: The 12th Edition” on Tuesday\, July 16 at 12:30 p.m. EDST. \nAs in the past this webinar will provide NABR members with a unique opportunity to ask questions directly of the leadership of Animal Care’s Animal Welfare Operations. A lot has changed in the last year. The final rule on Standards for Birds Not Bred for Use in Research Under the Animal Welfare Act was implemented\, the Animal Welfare Inspection Guide was revised\, and the USDA and Justice Department entered into a Memorandum of Understanding on Civil Enforcement of the Animal Welfare Act. You should take advantage of this unique opportunity provided to NABR members to better understand what impact these and other ongoing changes may have on your institution concerning compliance with the Animal Welfare Regulations. \nQuestions should be submitted in advance to info@nabr.org. They will be reviewed and formatted to prevent duplication and will be answered in the order they are received\, so please submit them as soon as possible. As in the past we will schedule the session for an hour but will continue the webinar until all questions have been addressed. \nRegistration is available here. \n

SUMMARY:NABR Webinar: “Current and Future Challenges Facing Biomedical Research”
DESCRIPTION:NABR Webinar: “Current and Future Challenges Facing Biomedical Research” \nPlease join us on Tuesday\, Oct. 8\, at 12:30 p.m. EST for the 61st NABR webinar when Matt Bailey\, President of NABR and FBR; Brandon Morton\, NABR’s Director of Government Affairs; and Taylor Bennett\, NABR’s Senior Scientific Advisor\, sit down to discuss the “Current and Future Challenges Facing Biomedical Research.” NABR is the only national nonprofit organization dedicated solely to advocating for sound public policy that recognizes the vital role animals play in biomedical research. In that role\, NABR provides the unified voice for the scientific community on legislative and regulatory matters affecting laboratory animal research at the federal level. FBR provides valuable communication expertise promoting public understanding and support for biomedical research to address the challenges and variety of tactics used by those opposed to animals in biomedical research. These tactics include calling into question the validity of animal models\, the money spent to support that research\, an increased number of legislative efforts at the federal\, state and local level and targeted campaigns against specific areas of research. In addition\, these groups have effectively weaponized the use of FOIA and state open records acts to target institutions and individuals. In this webinar\, recent legislative and regulatory issues will be reviewed\, and animal rights campaigns will be highlighted to share lessons learned for addressing the challenges facing the research community. \nRegister:  https://register.gotowebinar.com/register/1681185605630712411

SUMMARY:"What’s Emergent in Emerging Adult Recovery Support Services Research?" Forum Series (Part 1)
DESCRIPTION:"What’s Emergent in Emerging Adult Recovery Support Services Research?" Forum Series (Part 1) \n"Emerging adults aged 16–25 face heightened risks of opioid use disorder (OUD) and fentanyl-related overdoses. Although medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD) are effective for long-term management\, emerging adults often encounter significant challenges\, including unmet needs in employment\, housing\, and social support. These difficulties are further combined with life transitions\, such as establishing independence\, pursuing vocational growth\, and fostering stable relationships\, along with risks of high rates of co-occurring mental health issues and polysubstance use\, which can complicate recovery efforts. Despite these challenges\, very few research studies have addressed the unique recovery needs of this population. \nThis forum series offers a platform for meaningful dialogue on how to best support emerging adults in their recovery journeys. DESCRIPTION:NABR Webinar: “The FY 2024 USDA Oversight Process” \nPlease join us on Jan. 14\, 2025\, at 12:30 p.m. EST for the first of NABR’s 2025 Webinar series\, “The FY 2024 USDA Oversight Process.” Each year NABR obtains information from the USDA’s Animal Care Inspection System database using the Public Search Tool to review the inspection results for the previous fiscal year and provides a review and analysis of that information. The Public Search Tool was updated in September 2020 and now also contains information on enforcement actions including letters of warning and stipulation agreements. A preliminary review of the data using the Public Search Tool shows that the number of inspections conducted in FY 2024 was in line with the number conducted in FY 2023\, but the total number of noncritical\, critical and repeat citations decreased. In this webinar we will present our annual review of the inspection data along with an analysis of the type of noncompliant items cited and the enforcement actions taken as result of certain citations issued. \nRegister at this link:  https://register.gotowebinar.com/register/3774571084692246358 \n

SUMMARY:ISAM Annual Congress - Hamburg\, Germany - May 25\, 2025
DESCRIPTION:Global Innovation Day for Addiction Therapeutics \nAddiction is a major public health issue affecting millions worldwide. Innovative solutions are urgently needed to combat this crisis\, reduce its impact\, and save lives. The World Innovation Day for Addiction Therapeutics serves as a platform for fostering collaboration between academia\, health sector\, regulatory agencies\, and industry\, driving innovation\, and accelerating the development of effective tools and technologies for assessment and treatments for addiction and its comorbidities. By bringing together experts from various fields\, this event aims to catalyze the development of new modalities for assessment\, therapies\, and interventions. There are several reasons why convening such an event matters: \nBridging the Gap: There is often a disconnection between scientific discoveries and their implementation in real-world settings. This event aims to bridge that gap by facilitating dialogue and collaboration between clinicians from the addiction medicine/psychiatry academia\, industry professionals\, and researchers from both\, facilitating the translation of groundbreaking research into tangible benefits for patients. \nEnhancing Investment: Securing funding is a significant hurdle in the journey from research to market. The presence of senior venture capital and other types of investors and funding agencies at this event provides a unique opportunity for startups and established companies to showcase their innovations\, attract investment\, and accelerate their growth. \nKnowledge Sharing: The event will feature multiple panels and lectures\, offering participants a chance to share their experiences\, learn from each other\, and stay updated on the latest trends and advancements in the field of addiction medicine therapeutics. This exchange of knowledge is crucial for driving progress and fostering a collaborative environment. \nBuilding a Stronger Community: By gathering many leaders from clinics\, universities\, industry\, regulatory agencies and investment communities\, this event creates a robust network of professionals committed to improving addiction treatment. These connections can lead to long-term collaborations\, innovative projects\, and a stronger\, more unified approach to addressing addiction. \nThe First World Innovation Day for Addiction Therapeutics will be on May 25th\, in Hamburg\, Germany as a full day pre-conference event for the ISAM 2025 Annual Congress \nhttps://www.isam-hamburg.com/ \n\n\nWho is Invited?  We would like to invite all companies\, startups\, and entrepreneurs active in developing products for addiction prevention\, assessment\, treatment\, and rehabilitation to join us for “World Innovations for Addiction Therapeutics – From Scientific Discovery to Saving Lives.” This is an ISAM event designed for academia/industry partnership\, focusing on innovation and investment in newest technologies for helping patients affected by addictions and their comorbidities. This event will take place on Sunday\, May 25\, 2025\, in Hamburg\, Germany\, as part of the official pre-conference activities of the ISAM 27th Global Congress. Bringing together more than many leaders from clinics\, universities\, industry\, and investment communities\, this unique gathering aims to facilitate the exchange of experiences and visions for this evolving field. \nAt ISAM’s Innovations Day\, both innovators and established companies will have the opportunity to share their ideas\, product and company narratives with clinicians\, scientists\, venture capitalists\, engineers\, regulatory agencies\, and industry professionals. Aligned with the theme of the day\, participating companies are invited to spotlight the challenges and advantages of innovation specific to their products from discovery to implementation in communities. The agenda for the day will include multiple panels and talks\, ensuring that all the registered\, invited and willing participants have the opportunity for podium time\, either individually or as part of panel discussions. \nIn addition to the presenting companies\, senior venture capital investors from major corporations will be invited. This offers an excellent platform for you and your company to showcase your vision\, ideas\, achievements\, forge new connections\, learn from peers\, assess progress\, and become more competitive and successful in the future market of addiction therapeutics. \nThe Application Process:  We encourage all companies\, startups\, and entrepreneurs active in developing products for addiction prevention\, assessment\, treatment\, and rehabilitation to consider participating in this event. If you are interested\, please submit your letter of interest by sending an email to the ISAM office isam.mdorozio@gmail.com to join the event at your earliest convenience. The subject line of email should be “Expressing Interest in ISAM 2025 Innovation Day.” Subsequently\, you will hear from us. \nPlease note that the established companies selected to participate will enter into an agreement with the ISAM through which the responsibilities / liabilities / entitlements of each of the parties shall be articulated and agreed upon. Please also note that each company selected to participate will\, as a part of the agreement with ISAM\, provide an unrestricted grant to the ISAM\, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization registered in Canada\, besides paying the registration fee for the ISAM 2025 conference. \nThe Agenda Outline (TBC)\nA.
