Today, the Washington Examinerpublished an opinion piece authored by FBR president Matthew R. Bailey, sharing the importance and necessity of primates in research. From Parkinson’s disease, to Zika virus and to epilepsy – Bailey lists how primates have helped the discovery of many medical treatments in the past and in the future.
“In an ideal world, scientists wouldn’t need to use animals in research. Alternatives like computer models would be sufficient. But in the real world, those alternatives simply aren’t sophisticated or powerful enough to model everything that happens in the human body.
We share as much as 98% of our DNA with nonhuman primates. They play an essential, irreplaceable role in the research process.”
