NABR Update – Special Alert: USDA June FOIA Logs Target Research

NABR Member Targeting

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) has released their June 2019 freedom of information (FOIA)logs. There was a total of 314 requests, 237 of which originated with the New England Anti-Vivisection Society (NEAVS). This is a marked increase over USDA’s May FOIA numbers. The primary target of these FOIA requests appears to be dogs, cats, and  non-human primates (NHPs).

NABR members are encouraged to visit the FOIA page and do a “CTRL+F” search to see if their institution is among those being targeted. It is unlikely that APHIS has been able to respond to all, if any, of these requests at this time. However, these FOIA requests often precipitate targeting campaigns against the research community.

Please note: the USDA does not notify institutions when they receive a FOIA request unless it is to offer an opportunity to redact personal or proprietary information included in a column E attachment to the annual report.
