Not because research has failed to contribute to the health and well-being of humans and animals\, but because a large and increasing proportion of the opposition ignores or dismisses scientific evidence of the effectiveness\, and necessity\, of animal research. Opponents also increasingly ignore or dismiss ethical principles that have been cornerstones of medical science\, such as the principle that humans are of greater worth and value than animals and that we may use them when necessary to understand and combat disease\, illness\, and disability. \nAnimal research opponents are adopting ideologies that ignore or reject critical scientific and ethical principles that have traditionally been foundations of animal research. These ideologies are adopted before debate or discussion even begins. The result is that it has become even more difficult for the research community to defend animal research by documenting the necessity and benefits of this research\, the humane treatment of research animals\, and the lack of availability of non-animal methodologies in certain kinds of research. \nIdeological rejection of animal research is not new. What is new is its adoption by government officials who have the power to curtail and eventually end animal research. In the past\, such officials could be counted on to consider impartially and fairly the scientific and ethical case for animal research. \nThis webinar will describe and explain the most important ideologies employed against scientifically and ethically valuable and necessary animal research. We will explore ways of countering these ideologies\, including practical steps all who are involved in animal research can\, and must\, take now.
