The CPDD-AMP Animal Research Policy Fellowship is a prestigious opportunity for early career scientists and advanced graduate students who are passionate about animal research and interested in shaping science policy. This one-year fellowship is designed to provide immersive experience in advocacy, policy development, and public engagement, while supporting the continued advancement of biomedical research.

Fellowship Overview

This fellowship is a collaboration between the College on Problems of Drug Dependence (CPDD) and Americans for Medical Progress (AMP). It aims to cultivate future leaders in science policy by offering hands-on training and mentorship in the legislative and regulatory landscape surrounding animal research.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Early career scientists (e.g., postdocs, junior faculty (1-2nd year), or advanced graduate students (e.g. candidacy stage or ABD).
  • Supports humane and essential animal research.
  • Committed to gaining direct experience in the policy landscape with a strong interest in learning how to effectively advocate for the continued use of humane and ethical animal research in this space.
  • Only legal residents of the US may apply.
Fellow Responsibilities

The CPDD/AMP Animal Research Policy Fellow will work closely with AMP’s Director of Communications and Science Policy, as well as CPDD’s Animals in Research Committee and Policy Committee.

  • Attend and participate in CPDD’s meetings.
  • Work on federal and state science policy issues affecting animal research.
  • Support the development of policy briefs, public messaging, stakeholder communications, and advocacy materials.
  • Develop/contribute new materials about CPDD and animals in addiction research, including why the area of research is essential and career opportunities in the field.
  • Attend the CPDD annual meeting during the fellowship year, and participate in planning the annual Animals in Research Committee Forum.
  • Participate in planning CPDD’s annual Hill Day event and attend the event during the fellowship year.
  • Engage in promotion of the fellowship to help advertise the program to future applicants, including via tabling events at the annual meeting and online.
  • Engage with CPDD staff to create content for social media relevant to animal research and the fellowship.

  • A cover letter detailing your reasons for applying including 1) what you hope to gain from the experience and how it will benefit your career trajectory/professional development, 2) how you plan to contribute to the goals of the fellowship, and 3) prior experiences you believe will benefit you as a fellow.
  • A curriculum vitae.
  • Two letters of recommendation.

Potential fellows will be judged both on their knowledge of the issues related to growing scrutiny to conduct animal-based research through legislative, policy, and public pressure, qualifications and experience, and on their demonstration of support and their commitment to promoting the essential role of animal research in addressing drug use, misuse, and dependence.
