Post-Doctoral Fellowship – McLean Hospital
McLean Hospital, America’s top ranked freestanding psychiatric hospital, is inviting applications for a Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Psychology, located at McLean Fernside, an addiction recovery program located in Princeton, MA.
The Post-Doctoral Fellow in psychology will provide psychological services to patients in a 30-day residential setting. The Fellow will conduct individual psychotherapy, family therapy, and lead therapy and educational groups. They will maintain contact with family members as appropriate and offer family meetings as well as document in the record the completion of treatment plans, weekly notes and all appropriate progress notes, including clinical summaries and other documentation as necessary. They will take primary responsibility for case management including aftercare referrals, appointments, and care coordination and will serve as liaison to other health care professionals.
This position requires clinical psychology knowledge and practice which incorporates a variety of evidence-based models including psychodynamic, supportive, cognitive behavioral, exploratory-interpretive, motivational, and educational. Clinical psychology practice applies specific knowledge, theories and methods to assessment and diagnosis, treatment (individual, couple, family and group) and aftercare planning.
Educational Goals: The McLean Fernside Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Addiction Psychology provides training in the psychological treatment of individuals with moderate-to-severe substance use disorders (SUDs), many of whom have co-occurring psychiatric conditions. In a setting that balances clinical casework with ample supervision, post-doctoral fellows master techniques including Cognitive Behavioral Relapse Prevention, Motivational Interviewing, and Integrated Group Therapy for the treatment of co-occurring SUDs and mood disorders. Fellows also are trained to adapt other evidence-based therapies, including Dialectical Behavior Therapy and Acceptance and Commitment therapy, to this patient population. Clinical experiences include treatment in group, individual, and family settings, as well as case management.
Caseload: Postdoctoral fellows generally follow 2-3 patients, meeting three-to-four times weekly, as well as lead 3-4 groups per week. There are also opportunities for elective clinical experiences at other McLean Hospital programs depending on the fellow’s educational needs and interests. Time for professional development and research activities is also provided.
Supervision: Individual supervision is provided at least 2-hours-weekly, in addition to 1-hour-weekly group supervision with licensed clinicians. Supervision also takes place at multidisciplinary rounds, which meet every week day for a total of 5-hours-weekly. Supervisors hold academic appointments at Harvard Medical School and are licensed psychologists or psychiatrists. During regular work hours, supervisors are present at the clinical site and are available to meet patients with the fellow or for urgent consultation.
Treatment Setting: Since 1811, McLean Hospital has been a world leader in the treatment of mental illness and chemical dependency, research into the causes of mental illness, and the training of generations of mental health care providers. The hospital offers a full continuum of care including inpatient, acute and longer-term residential, partial hospital, and outpatient services.
McLean Fernside (https://www.mcleanhospital.org/treatment/fernside) is a 30-day, residential program within the McLean Hospital Division of Alcohol and Drug Abuse. The treatment program is housed in a former bed-and-breakfast in the quaint town of Princeton, Massachusetts. The region features charming New England town living with excellent schools and recreational opportunities along with the nearby cultural and entertainment offerings of Boston and Worcester.
Salary and recruitment package in accordance with Hospital policies, and a Harvard Medical School appointment at the academic rank of Clinical Fellow will be contingent on meeting the requirements for an HMS appointment and candidate qualifications.
Qualifications: Applicants must have a doctoral degree in psychology (Psy.D. or Ph.D.) from an accredited program.
