Building an InterprofessionaL and a Dept workforce in Substance Use and Pain (BUILD-UP) is a NIDA-funded postdoctoral training program. The Program Directors are Erin Winstanley, PhD at the University of Pittsburgh (elw194@pitt.edu) and Jessica Merlin, MD, PhD, MBA at The Ohio State University (Jessica.Merlin@osumc.edu).
Substance use—including misuse and use disorders—and chronic pain are common, highly interrelated public health problems in the United States, and few interventions exist to improve outcomes for both conditions together. Cross-sectional and cohort studies estimate that roughly 40% of individuals with chronic pain also meet criteria for a substance use disorder (SUD), and pain interferes with recovery for millions of adults with a past-year substance use disorder.
BUILD-UP is a NIDA-funded T32 postdoctoral training program that prepares fellows for independent, interdisciplinary clinical research careers at the intersection of chronic pain and substance use/SUD. Fellows receive personalized mentorship, rigorous methodological training, and protected research time to develop the skills and publication record needed to launch an NIH-funded research career.

- Virtual Training Option: Fellows can train fully remotely or in person — one of very few remote-eligible postdoctoral fellowships in this field.
