Eyes Wide Shut: Social and Structural Processes Contributing
to Addiction and its Health Consequences

Jamila K. Stockman, Ph.D.
Associate Professor and Vice Chief of Global Public Health in the Department of Medicine at the University of California San Diego School of Medicine.


Dr. Stockman is also Director of the Disparities Core at the San Diego Center for AIDS Research. Dr. Stockman is an infectious disease epidemiologist and has spent the last 10 years conducting HIV prevention and treatment research in the context of gender-based violence and substance abuse among marginalized populations.

Steffanie A. Strathdee, Ph.D.
Associate Dean of Global Health Sciences and Harold Simon Professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of California San Diego School of Medicine.


An infectious disease epidemiologist, she has spent the last two decades focusing on HIV prevention in marginalized populations in developing countries and has published over 500 peer-reviewed publications.

Nora Volkow, M.D.
Director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse at NIH.


Dr. Volkow pioneered the use of brain imaging to investigate the effects of drugs in the human brain and has demonstrated that drug addiction is a brain disease. She has published more than 600 scientific articles and edited three books. Named one of Time Magazine's "Top 100 People Who Shape our World", included as “One of the 20 People to Watch” by Newsweek magazine and named "Innovator of the Year" by U.S. News & World Report.

George F. Koob, Ph.D.
Director of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) at NIH.


An authority on alcoholism, Dr. Koob has published over 700 peer-reviewed papers and several books including the “Neurobiology of Addiction.” He received his Ph.D. in Behavioral Physiology from Johns Hopkins University in 1972.
